Geography – Overpopulation & Underpopulation

Is overpopulation a dirty word? - The Overpopulation Project

INTRODUCTION

Let’s start off answering one key question and define our terms per say, so to commence forth ‘What is Overpopulation and Underpopulation’. ‘Overpopulation – the fact of a country or city, etc. having too many people for the amount of food, materials, and space available there: Overpopulation is one of the country’s most pressing social problems’ according to the Cambridge Dictionary. ‘Underpopulation – A situation in which there are too few people to realise the economic potential of an area or support its population’s standard of living. It has sometimes been argued that countries such as Australia, Canada, and Mongolia have too few people to make best use of their resources of food, minerals, and energy’ according to the Oxford Reference. As you can clearly see these two are polar opposites; these two pose problems of their own, usually two polar opposites one is good and the other is bad. For example ‘Good, Bad’, ‘Happy, Melancholy’ and ‘Great, Terrible’. Now that we’ve got the definitions out of the way, let’s get to the main part.

OVERPOPULATION

As defined in the Introduction, Overpopulation is having too many people that you (as a country) can cope with – for example stuffing your mouth full of french fries; this would be called ‘stuffing’ though. You can clearly see how this might cause problems but there are more reasons.

In this graph you can clearly see the massive rise during 1850 -2017. Around 1920 – 1950 you can see that the population really started to rise. This is around the time of the Baby Boomers. Named so because of the rise in babies after WWII. This could be because Governments needed more workers after the World War where more than 70 million people perished across the globe. Some countries boomed so much in population, for example India and China. China even putting in a one baby-law. This came with problems as you would want that one baby to be a boy causing lots of girl babies and infants to be killed through terrible ways. This almost all the time causes Gender Imbalances. As the population grows, so does the demand for food and other materials. This causes Carbon emissions. In the graph you can clearly see the correlation. As the World’s population increases (we’re actually less than a billion away from 8 Billion as our population – I expect celebrations once we reach that milestone!) so does the need. Need is very Important, The Human body needs to eat, drink and sleep. However as the population grows there are less things to eat and drink, less places to sleep. Which sometimes Could mean that Viruses are Helpful… sometimes?

UNDERPOPULATION

As defined in the Introduction Overpopulation is the exact opposite of underpopulation. For example if you have some nachos and dips, and you eat all the nachos but only eat 1/10 of the dip. With this one you can see the problem is you are not utilising what you have. This happens in Australia, Canada, Mongolia, Russia and the list just goes on and on but this time it’s not with Nachos – instead it’s with space and density of the population.

As you can clearly see from the graphs you can see the coastal regions are populated the most; if you go deeper into the land you will see 1 or 2 people a square mile. As a national average you will see it is 3 – 13 people a square mile. The most populated areas being the main cities – such as Perch, Hobart and Sydney. This is proved by Information published by the Australian and it illustrates that 71% of Australians live in Major Cities while an extra 15% live in smaller cities or towns. You can see from the graph that almost all of the 38 million people that live in Canada live near the Border to the USA. Despite – in land size – being the biggest country Canada is a classic example of underpopulation. Canada has lots of natural resources but they don’t really utilise its resources.
