Birmingham’s Clean Air Zone

As pollution is on the rise and affecting the future generation and the Earth, the Government introduced the new Clean Air Zone (CAZ)to reduce the Carbon Emission from cars. This new system was introduced on 1 June 2021 and it means that certain cars are allowed to go through the area freely where as other cars need to pay £8 to enter these areas. For example, Edgbaston, Birmingham is a Clean Air Zone like the City Centre in Birmingham and cars that are more polluting than other cars can pass but have to pay £8.

Big companies are also going Carbon Neutral to help the environment

A Clean Air Zone is a place where certain cars that don’t pollute much are allowed to dive in so electric cars, Tesla and more car brands like Honda, BMW, Volkswagen, Benz and more, can enter the areas like Edgbaston without pay but cars with more Cabon Emission and Carbon Footprint, the owners of those cars have to pay 8 pounds every time they enter areas like Edgbaston

Though the changes of the local areas sound good and will hopefully effect the environment in a good way, people ad news papers are against the idea and aren’t really a big fan of it. A newspaper called The Socialist (https://www.socialistparty.org.uk/) said that it was a tax on the poor.

Though many city council members didn’t like this idea obviously, but, they were forced into it by the Government when they said that if they don’t introduce the CAZ, they could be fined 60 million pounds. This puts pressure on people who own second hand cars that are cheap because they are likely to emit a lot of Carbon and if the rely mainly on shops or small businesses in Clean Air Zones, they wold struggle.

Pollution is a topic that is discussed everywhere. From the Houses of Parliament, to the roadside and homes. Although this new CAZ that was introduced the Government sounds good, there is still debate o the topic of CAZ and pollution.
