Where does Christmas descend from?

As Christmas is soon approaching, we thought we would write our first ever Christmas article. There will also be an article on the day as well, from the winner of our competition. If you do not know about our Childrens Chronicles Christmas Competition click the watch the video below to find out about it.

Christmas was actually celebrated first by nordic regions, pagan vikings and German tribes. However, these people would celebrate the Winter Solstice which is on the 21st December. They would all get together, eat food and drink drinks. This festival was known as Yule. Many of these Yuletide traditions actually are also in Christianity. This is because at this time christianity was sweeping Germany and was the main religion then and still is now.

‘But, what traditions do we still do?’ You may be asking yourself, the answer is many. Three traditions we still do.

The first thing they gave to us was Father Christmas. The most noticeable figure of Christmas was found by the Yule’s. This came from the Norse God Odin said to be Father of all Gods. He was described to look exactly like Father Christmas except the red outfit.

The second thing is Christmas Elves. The story is called Álfar. This also came from a Nordic Folklore called a nisse. These little elves were said to have lived in sheds and barns.

The last thing is the christmas tree. However funny it may seem Vikings actually used to worship trees. They believed they were the plants if the sun god Blader. The viking decorated these evergreen trees in hope of encouraging the tree spirits.
