Investigators started to look at the past and came across the incident an eerily similar accident from 1999. This happened in Little rock, Arkansas. The crew of this American Airlines jet landed and then the plane skid off the runway causing 11 people to die. Greg Feith investigated that crash and said the first thing he though off was Déjà vu. In the Little rock crash it was discovered that there was a critical mistake. They did not follow all the rules. The air France had the spoilers are deployed and the reverse-thrusters were deployed as well. As the investigation continues a French newspaper, Le Figaro, prints this out.

The Toronto crash : The cockpit mystery

This was a story that claimed flight 358’s reverse thrusters broke. Reverse thrusters are what helps the plane land that is why you hear that sound like air is going through the engine. The newspaper also claimed that the Co-pilot of the plane tensed up and did not know what to do because of all the wind and the runways being so slippery. A few days after this newspaper report the investigation crew threw out it’s own report confirming what the french article said. Then CTSB, Canada’s Transportation safety board, found out that the reverse thrusters were there but they were not deployed. Usually even before touchdown, pilots put reverse thrusters but for this plane it took 17 seconds. That is much later then it should be.

Investigators find another fact. It was twice as high as it should have been causing it to land late meaning the reverse thrusters to land late and that causes the plane to fall off the hilL plus these conditions the crew just did not have enough time. There was a solution though the pilot could have aborted the landing, go around and then come back for the second try. But they did not, this means by the time the plane touchdown they only had 1500 metres to land which is far to less.

Look out for part Four coming out soon to read the rest of the story
